PBI-Colombia accompanies CREDHOS and FEDEPESAN on verification visit to the caño San Silvestre

On March 9, CREDHOS tweeted:

“#CREDHOS accompanied #FEDEPESAN [the Federation of Artisanal Fishermen of Santander] on a visit to verify the events that occurred in the San Silvestre caño [channel/spout], in which the death of fauna species and the burning of the water round were identified. Added to this is the death of fish that had occurred on March 3 in the La Represa sector.”

On Facebook, CREDHOS also reported:

“In a visit made by #CREDHOS accompanying #FEDEPESAN in a verification visit on 7 March, observing the latest events that have occurred in the San Silvestre channel and its surroundings, in which the death of species of fauna and the indiscriminate burning of the water roundabout were identified. In addition to this, the death of fish occurred on 3 March 2023 in the La Represa sector.”

We also recall that on August 26, 2022, PBI-Colombia also accompanied CREDHOS and Fedepesan as they denounced “an unknown oily liquid spill in Caño Rosario, which flows into Ciénaga San Silvestre, where there is death of fish and contamination”.

On the morning of June 30, 2022, PBI-Canada visited the San Silvestre wetland ecosystem in Barrancabermeja with CREDHOS, FEDEPESAN and PBI-Colombia and witnessed the impacts of Ecopetrol and large-scale agribusiness (buffalos and palm) on the water, wildlife and livelihoods of artisanal fishers.

On December 7, 2022, we hosted this webinar with CREDHOS and FEDEPESAN to further amplify their concerns about the San Silvestre wetlands.
